One Piece: 10 Shocking Facts About the God Valley Incident

Updated: 2 days ago

The world of One Piece thrives on hidden history, whispered legends, and world-shaking battles, and few events capture that mystery better than the God Valley Incident. Mentioned only in fragmented accounts and offhand comments by major players, this pivotal clash was so significant that the World Government erased it from existence, going so far as to wipe the entire island off the map. Yet its echoes can still be felt today: it involved the fall of the Rocks Pirates, the rise of future Emperors, the bonding of Roger and Garp, and the early embers of revolutionary fire.

Despite being buried in secrecy, recent reveals in the Egghead arc and supporting material have reignited interest in what happened on God Valley. From celestial corruption and stolen Devil Fruits to possible family reunions and a baby Shanks in a treasure chest, every new piece of information adds depth to this historic mystery. These ten facts and theories shed light on the chaotic battle, shifting alliances, and world-defining consequences of the God Valley Incident, one of the most impactful events in One Piece history.

The Incident Was Wiped From History

Just as Ohara and the Void Century were erased from maps and memories, God Valley was also forgotten. Following the battle, the World Government destroyed all records of the island, and the island itself mysteriously vanished. Because of the secretive nature of the event, it isn’t likely that the island was destroyed with a Buster Call like Ohara, but we have seen something like this happen before. In Sabo’s flashback during the Egghead arc we see Imu used a weapon to wipe the Lulusia Kingdom off the map in hopes of silencing Sabo and make sure he could not speak of what he saw in the holy land of Mareigoise.

The cover-up suggests the incident exposed truths the Government couldn’t risk leaking, such as the brutality of the Native Hunting Competition or the World Nobles’ theft of the Rocks. God Valley’s disappearance is not just a mystery, but a calculated erasure of uncomfortable history, further revealing the depths to which the World Government will go to cover its tracks.

The Original Yonko Were All There

Before they were Emperors, Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido served aboard the Rocks Pirates. During the incident, Kaido was a cabin boy receiving his Devil Fruit from Big Mom. Adding to the lore, One Piece Film: Red revealed that the Roger Pirates found baby Shanks in a treasure chest on God Valley. They later raised him, and he eventually founded the Red-Haired Pirates, the first Yonko crew introduced in the series. This means all four original Emperors have deep connections to the island.

A Clash Between The Strongest Groups in the Series

The God Valley Incident brought together nearly every major force in the One Piece world. Ginny tipped off the Rocks Pirates to the island’s location, setting off a chain reaction of chaos. The Holy Knights were already stationed there, making them the first target of the Rocks crew. Their assault drew in the Roger Pirates, and Garp and the Marines eventually entered the battle. This explosive confrontation pitted the Pirate King, a future Yonko, government enforcers, and key revolutionaries against each other on one island.

Unknown Reunions

Big Mom, along with her right-hand man Streusen, was busy attacking the Celestial Dragons; the former might’ve missed some familiar faces among the crowd. There were some members of the God Knights who shared some striking resemblance to the kids that Big Mom was friends with under the care of Mother Caramel.

Considering the ages match up, it is quite possible that the children she sold to the World Government later grew up to become Holy Knights. With the God Knights finally making their move on Elbaph, Big Mom having been recently defeated, and her history with the home of the giants, perhaps another God Valley flashback will occur sooner rather than later.

Jewelry Bonney’s Backstory

The youngest and only female Supernova, Jewelry Bonney, has roots dating back to the God Valley incident. Her adoptive father and former Warlord Kuma was a slave on the island and helped her mother, Ginny, escape. Ginny, who was also a member of the Revolutionary Army, along with Kuma, was captured and enslaved by Marigioise, where she became the wife of a world noble before contracting the sapphire scale disease and being cast out back to the main world.

Saint Jaygarcia Saturn was also on the island and later conducted experiments on Bonney, giving her the powers of the Age-Age Fruit without her having to eat it. It is also possible that the world noble who forced Ginny into marriage could have also been on God Valley. Due to a Worst Generation gender swap photo that Oda completed for an SBS, Bonney’s resemblance to Shanks has some fans speculating that the World Noble could be Saint Figerland Garling or someone in his family.

The Rocks Pirates Were Not The Aggressors

When Sengoku first mentions the God Valley incident, he simply states that Garp and the Marines teamed up with Roger and his crew to save the Celestial Dragons from the Rocks Pirates.

What he failed to mention, whether he is withholding this information or wasn’t aware of it himself, is that this was not just a random attack. According to Garp in the flashback we see in the Egghead arc, the World Nobles stole a treasure from Rocks from his base on Hachinosu, also known as Pirate Island.

The Monkey Family

Monkey D. Garp earned his title as the Hero of the Marines on God Valley. However, the Vice Admiral has refused to advance in the ranks of the Marines to avoid being directly under the world nobles, and he has no qualms about expressing his dislike for them. The events of God Valley could be the driving force behind this, as they reveal firsthand how inhumane the leaders of the world can be.

This disdain could have trickled down to his son, Monkey D. Dragon, who was once a member of the Marines. While there is a chance he, too, was involved in the God Valley incident, it is possible that he learned about what transpired from Garp later, and this could have been a spark that eventually led him to form the Freedom Fighters, which would later evolve into the Revolutionary Army.

Clash of D

During God Valley, the battle between Roger, Rocks, and Garp wasn’t just a battle of strong leaders in the One Piece world, but it was also a struggle among members of the D clan.

We’ve seen members of the D Clan work together in the series, notably the alliance between The Strawhats and the Heart Pirates, notably Luffy and Law, and we’ve also seen them fight against each other, as seen with Law and Blackbeard. To this day, we haven’t seen this many members of the D Clan in one fight, and with the mystery surrounding God Valley, there may have been even more members.

Powerful Devil Fruits on the Island

Not only were the Paw-Paw Fruit and the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon, on God Valley as prizes for the Native Hunting Competition, but other powerful devil fruits were there with powerful users. The Tremor-Tremor Fruit, Soul-Soul Fruit, and Float-Float Fruit were all there via Rocks Pirates, White Beard, Big Mom, and Shiki, respectively.

We don’t know what other devil fruits the marines or pirates might’ve had or which other ones were used as prizes, but for an event this huge, other powerful devil fruits are sure to be revealed in the future.

Parallels to Marineford

Both were large-scale incidents that resulted in the death of someone from the D clan (Rocks and Ace). There were also multiple powerhouse forces there, as the Marines, two Yonko crews, and the seven warlords were involved. Both also involved stolen devil fruits, as Big Mom stole the Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon, from a young Emporio Ivankov before giving it to Kaido, and Blackbeard stole Whitebeard’s devil fruit to give to himself.

These events were also the first time the future Yonko would all be in the same place, as Blackbeard arrived to claim the power of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit, Luffy and Buggy participated in the attempt to rescue Ace, and Shanks showed up to put an end to the war. Garp, Whitebeard, Kuma, Ivankov, and Shanks are the only confirmed individuals known to have attended both events.
